Helfer was born in the rural area of Donalda, Alberta, Canada, to Dennis Elaine and Dennis Elaine Helfer. Her heritage includes German, English. Swedish as well as Norwegian. She attended in the William E. Hay Composite High School, located within Stettler (Alberta). She lived and worked on the family's farm alongside her three sisters: Trena, Tammy and Tara. She was 17 when The agent from her modeling agency noticed the model while waiting in line at a theater.
